RESEARCH

A few big ideas inform my research: resistance, power, political violence, protest and social change. I am deeply interested in how and why people practice resistance, how oppositional actors try and bring about political change, and how people make sense of their journeys into and out of political contention.

From social movements to violent militant networks, grassroots activists, and those practicing everyday forms of resistance, I explore how different actors pursue political goals. In doing so, I look at how ideology influences political contention, how individual and collective narratives emerge from and are shaped by oppositional practices, and how space and place are implicated in these processes. I have carried out research looking at a range of movements committed to different ideological positions, from radical environmental activists and anti-fascists, to militant Islamists and religious nationalists.

I am regularly consulted by practitioner and policymaking communities, and serve on a range of advisory boards, as well as supporting the work of community-based and third sector organisations. I also engage widely with the media and the public through writing for audiences beyond the academy, more of which you can learn about here.
