TEACHING
I care about teaching. I am passionate about enabling students to develop an appetite for learning and an enthusiasm for knowledge creation. As well as teaching particular methods, theories, and forms of knowledge, I try to develop in students a broader set of critical, analytical skills that translate beyond the classroom.
I am engaged in a range of teaching at Lancaster. At departmental level, I convene the core the postgraduate module Theories and Methods in Postgraduate Study, and from 2018 will contribute to teaching on the undergraduate module Understanding Politics and Governance. At faculty level, I designed a new course on ‘Risky Research: Ethics, Reflexivity and Risk’ for the postgraduate Research Training Programme, and I am engaged in cross-faculty teaching on the Cybersecurity MSc, teaching on the Security and Conflict in a Digital Age module.
Beyond the university, I'm engaged in a wide range of educational activities, whether that's delivering courses to young people on questions of radicalisation and political violence or providing training and continuing professional development support for third sector and practitioner communities.
Previously, my teaching at St Andrews was primarily in relation to the Masters in Terrorism and Political Violence. As part of this, I taught core modules on both the distance and residential programmes. It was rewarding to see my commitment to teaching recognised through the St Andrews Excellence in Teaching (Postgraduate) Award, which I received in 2014.
